Italian

Welcome to Italian! The study of Italian is a long-standing tradition at Cheltenham Secondary College. Italian is one of the top six languages studied in Victoria. It is a language like English that uses the Roman Alphabet and allows students to develop and extend their literacy skills.

All classes in Years 7 and 8 study the Italian language and culture through topics that are relevant and authentic. All students enjoy our annual Italian Week celebrations, including food, film, games and music.

Italian is an elective subject at the Year 9 level and our students can choose to continue Italian through to VCE. The Year 9 course offers a celebration of the Italian language and culture through the four units of Italian Music, Film, Food and Travel. Our traditional Italian Study Tour is an optional extracurricular program of the Italian elective. Students who choose to continue with elective Italian are offered the opportunity to travel to Italy and develop their independent language skills. Year 9 Italian students who successfully complete Semester 1 and Semester 2 Italian, will be eligible to enrol in Year 10 Italian.

The Year 10 course extends the celebration of the Italian language and culture through the traditions of Italian Music, Film, Food and Travel. Incursions and excursions are offered, which may include the Dante Alighieri Poetry Competition at Melbourne University and Lygon Street excursion and the Italian Film Festival excursion. Year 10 Italian students may apply for the Italian Study Tour and travel to Italy, to put their language skills into action and experience the Italian language and culture firsthand. Year 10 Italian students who successfully complete Semester 1 and Semester 2 Italian, will be eligible to enrol in VCE Italian.

The pathway to Italian VCE is sequential. Students who complete Years 9 and 10 Italian successfully before progressing to VCE Italian. VCE Italian represents the culmination of four years of dedication to building independent language skills, strengthening intercultural awareness and celebrating the heart of Italian culture. Beyond VCE Italian, many of our students elect to continue their Italian language and cultural studies at University level in Australia and Italy.
