Middle School
As students transition to Middle School, relationships play a pivotal role in strengthening the College's inclusive culture, building a deeper sense of community and respect that reinforces our vision and values. Greater focus is placed on students taking responsibility for their own learning, setting goals, and being global citizens.
The Middle School program focuses on mental health, careers, real-life experiences, diversity and inclusion. Students will undertake mental health first aid that increases awareness, and practical skills to support someone experiencing mental health problems. Year 9 students will participate in mock job interviews and Year 10 will attend work experience. A City and Country week-long expedition will be offered to the Year 9 students. This experience will expose the students to the City of Melbourne and explore landmarks such as RMIT, the M.C.G., Eureka Tower and the Old Melbourne Gaol. They will also investigate issues around homelessness. As part of the program, students will undertake a day at a farm where they will discover the concept of ‘farm to plate’. Students will participate in developing a respectful understanding of Indigenous culture, languages, politics, and the structure of Indigenous communities. The program explores diversity, inclusion, and the challenges faced by many Australians including discrimination, prejudice, violence, bullying, sexuality, gender, and judgment, which can all negatively impact mental health.
Increased subject choices allow students to explore new areas, potentially select subjects they may not have considered previously. Career planning and pathways become an important discussion as students are encouraged to undertake a VCE subject in Year 10.
